Steve’s Journal From the Heart

THIS IS DANIEL...

My Donor...

Thank you is not enough...

Eternal gratitude is closer yet insufficient to express the Power of Life you gave me!

Daniel had recently turned 31 in this photo. He is holding Vannessa's daughter, his niece, Addy.

His heart is strong! Like a new engine...

I understand he was a man of energy. I can testify!

I (we) recently passed an exercise stress test with echocardiogram and a Cardiac MRI with every analytical parameter indicating completely healthy heart function, over 2 years since the transplant surgery! We nailed it!

This 33 yo heart has a clean bill of health! YES!!!

(This is the power of organ donation...)

It's great to be alive, and it's great to be healthy!

Thanks Daniel, my brother!

"Until I Walk a Mile in Your Moccasins"

03/12/22

Wait, just a mile?

Instead, how about: "...unless you've walked 55 years in my moccasins..."

And "...unless I've done the same in yours..."

(This is probably a draft chapter in a future book.) (Perhaps this can help someone...)

I have no right to judge. But I'm human. I observe things. I formulate opinions. Human nature. What we do with the information matters. Like it did in kindergarten, same now.

55 years worth of decisions made, circumstances faced, consequences dealt with, perspectives... same for you.

“My life was saved to tell you this story.

2/22/2022

In June 2020, I had 5 weeks to live. I had a rare disease called cardiac sarcoidosis. It was undiagnosed for 5 years.

My heart failed July 29, 2020. An intra-aortal balloon pump kept my blood flowing. I received 7 heart offers in 3 days.

The heart transplant was August 3, 2020. As a heart transplant survivor, I would like to make myself available to you......

... to any who are struggling with heart disease....

I should have died several times, but I now have a clean bill of health. If I can do it, so can you, your loved ones, or someone you know. In ICU, I had pneumonia, ventilator, sepsis, medically induced coma, and near death experiences. Happy to share the experience.

They told my family they didn't know what else to do. Then I had a miraculous recovery.

I did the cardiac rehabilitation program. They expected 40% exercise recovery, I got 209%.

That gave me strength, stamina, and confidence. I climbed Sharptop Mountain, 90 days after discharge. My life was saved to tell you this story.

The donor's name is Daniel. I received a letter from his younger sister.

(Elton John: “Daniel my brother...")

She shared that their mother passed 8 years before.

(Elton John: "Do you still feel the pain?")

I saw Elton John in concert in 2019. The video (behind the drummer) was amazing. A younger man aged to an older man!

(Elton John: "Oh God it looks like Daniel...")

Remarkable! Inexplicable! You must see the video. He comes to Florida in April. I hope to meet him.

I hope to meet Daniel's family someday.

American Heart Association heard my testimony. State and federal lobbyists called me for help.

I'm helping to get a Florida bill passed on CPR for 911 operators, and two Federal bills passed on cardiac rehab programs. I'll be meeting with Florida senators Scott and Rubio in the coming weeks.

69% of cardiac sarcoidosis cases are found in autopsies. That's not good. There is a cure for this disease if it's detected early enough. Steroids kill sarcoids. The mission is clear.

I'm working on a bill for early detection of cardiac sarcoidosis. Dr. Leslie Cooper of Mayo Clinic, their leading cardiologist researching this topic, is helping, asking me to speak to medical boards, and wants me to write a case study.

I had no fear facing death.

This formula worked for me:

faith + perseverance = victory

After a complete recovery, with a perspective on life that can be gained no other way, I hope my testimony can bring hope to others who need hope. Please help me instill courage and hope in others facing similar circumstances.

"UNSTOPPABLE"

1/21/2022

After overcoming a rare heart disease, heart failure, transplant, pneumonia, septic shock, and near death experiences, and achieving full recovery with a clean bill of health, things seemed fairly under control. But don't blink. This thing called life always has something up its sleeve... be prepared. Be unstoppable against the ‘sarcoidosis’ in your life, whatever that may be for you.

In the last 6 weeks, there was scare related to the anti-rejection medication I have to take and a few trips to the ER (where I was blown away by the unstopability of hospital workers). Coming out of that experience with a full recovery, I’m feeling more motivated than ever to pursue the lifesaving missions I have clearly been assigned.

We have exciting news to share tomorrow regarding recent advocacy opportunities with the American Heart Association.

But here's the UNSTOPPABLE part…

I've gotten environmental bills passed and I know the legislative process. I firmly believe, with unstoppable faith and determination, that our foundation activities will result in a bill that will be passed by Congress in 2023 resulting in a sufficient grant that will lead to a method of early detection for cardiac sarcoidosis patients, and drastically reduce the number of fatal, premature cardiac events.

That is an unstoppable mission. 💪♥️🙏🙂

"A Miraculous Heart Transplant"

12/16/2020

“I believe in miracles… “ (That is another great song from the 70’s… can you hear it?) Well, I have a true, miraculous story to share…. Perhaps you are wondering about the recent flurry of 'gratitude' posts? Maybe you noticed some comments about prayers over some sort of health issue? Tis true, and with the recovery now complete, here's the story...

…. I had a heart transplant on August 3rd. (Yes) (I know!!) (Thanks…) It is another amazing chapter in a life story worth telling – not for my sake – no… for the thousands of people out there that I know I can help…

The way it all happened was, no doubt, a miracle… It is miraculous that I am still alive, and I can't shut up about it. (This may be a speech outline... Or the outline for a book). I pray this encourages you and gives hope despite any circumstance you may be facing.

Before I tell the story (for anyone interested enough to read this dissertation), let me be absolutely clear that I no longer have a heart problem! I am recovering so incredibly well, and I feel great!

So, what happened? On the morning of July 29th, I called my doctor, told him I wasn't feeling well, he admitted me, my blood pressure tanked, my heart was non-responsive to the medicine. I was dying. Luckily, thankfully, miraculously, I was at the hospital and they put me on a balloon pump to keep my heart beating while they miraculously found a perfect match donor within days!

How is a heart transplant orchestrated in five days!?!
